Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

No-fault medical coverage that pays your injuries from a car accident regardless of who caused it.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP), sometimes called "no-fault" coverage, pays for medical bills, lost wages, and certain other expenses for you and your passengers after a car accident — regardless of who was at fault. PIP claims are paid quickly because there's no need to determine fault first.

PIP is mandatory in 12 "no-fault" states (Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, etc.) but Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin are NOT no-fault states. In our region, PIP is either optional or unavailable, and the equivalent coverage is called Medical Payments (MedPay).

MedPay is a smaller version of PIP — it pays medical bills (only) for you and your passengers, regardless of fault, up to the limit. Common MedPay limits are $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, and $25,000. Even if you have great health insurance, MedPay is worth considering because it pays your deductibles, copays, and any health-insurance gaps with no questions asked.
