Coverage options
Virginia Auto Insurance
Virginia requires 50/100/25 liability — raised from 30/60/20 on January 1, 2025 — plus uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits. The old option to pay a fee and drive uninsured is gone (July 2024): every Virginia driver now needs a policy. We compare carriers and typically recommend 100/300/100 with matching UM/UIM.
Virginia Homeowners Insurance
Virginia homes face hurricane and nor’easter wind along the coast and Hampton Roads, tidal and river flooding, and hail and wind inland. We size dwelling coverage to actual rebuild cost and structure wind, water-backup, and flood companions properly — including NFIP and private flood where the map calls for it.
Virginia Renters & Condo Insurance
Renters coverage is inexpensive across most Virginia markets, and Northern Virginia and Richmond landlords commonly require proof of liability before lease signing. Condo (HO-6) policies get sized to your association’s master-deductible exposure.
Virginia Commercial Insurance
Workers comp is mandatory in Virginia once a business has more than two employees — and “employee” counts part-time, seasonal, and working family members. We write comp, GL, commercial property, professional liability, and commercial auto for Virginia businesses across industries.
Virginia Life & Health Insurance
Term life, whole life, and individual/family health insurance for Virginia residents through carriers licensed with the Bureau of Insurance. Marketplace and off-exchange plans both available.
Virginia Umbrella Insurance
Personal umbrella from $1M to $10M that stacks on top of your auto + home liability — worth a close look in Northern Virginia, where jury awards and repair costs run well above national averages.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum auto insurance required in Virginia?
Virginia requires 50/100/25 — $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage — plus uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits. These minimums took effect January 1, 2025. Virginia also ended the old $500 uninsured-motor-vehicle fee in July 2024, so carrying a policy is now mandatory for every registered vehicle.
Is workers comp mandatory in Virginia?
Yes — any business with more than two employees must carry workers compensation, and Virginia counts employees broadly: part-time, seasonal, temporary workers, minors, and working family members all count toward the threshold. Uninsured employers face civil penalties and direct liability for workplace injuries.
Do I need flood insurance in Virginia?
It depends on location. Hampton Roads, the Northern Neck, and properties along the James, Potomac, and Rappahannock face real tidal and storm-surge exposure, and FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area properties with a mortgage are required to carry it. Standard homeowners policies exclude flood — NFIP or private flood fills the gap, and even moderate-risk parcels are often worth a quote.
Are Virginia insurance rates rising?
Yes — Virginia auto and home rates have climbed since 2022 with vehicle-repair, medical, and rebuild-cost inflation, and the higher 2025 liability minimums moved some minimum-coverage premiums up as well. The best response is re-shopping coverage across carriers at renewal — which is exactly what an independent agency does.
